FUNemployment continues. What is it, week 4? Is this still happening? YES IT IS.
I’ve been at my house this month probably more than the rest of this year. I love my morning teas and view of the backyard. Not working feels OK but you do need to keep yourself occupied. I went through some anxious moments but have done a fair job with sticking to the goal: taking a legit break from working. *Not* working is keeping my enthusiasm and passion at high levels in my search for the next best thing that I want to invest myself in.
Decisions: Try and avoid FT work. Freelance makes me smile. If FT work, it will be far far away from midtown and the large ad world. Small shop, start up etc. type vibe.
Since my last two weeks have been comprised of interviews, meetings and calls with job prospects and recruiters, here are a couple of pointers (as promised) for you job seekers:
+ Always keep track of which recruiter has pitched you were vs. where you have reached out directly. It’s a competitive field out there and you -always- want to play a fair game with recruiters. Trust me, their world is small and word goes around.
+ When one recruiter presents you to a company, you have a contract so to speak with that person and company for 6mos-up to a year. Meaning, if someone else presents you there later on, the original recruiter takes the cut. So keep track. Be honest and nice.
+ I have tried something new. I never take prints out of my resume with me. I send it -again- as an attachment, about an hour before my interview. I indirectly force my interviewer (or the assistant) to print it and therefore force them to scan my resume *before* i arrive. I dislike it when an interviewer has not done his homework on me. I have taken time to craft that piece of paper that means nothing to you in the end. Read it. Then I can pitch myself in person.
+ Don’t dress up. A simple, solid color dress with a splash of color works. Either it’s a funky necklace, belt or shoes. If a Creative is interviewing you, trust me, he/she *will* compliment on your funky shoes. (check!)
+ Power zone. Don’t let your hands carry you away. Keep your gestures between you waist and shoulder area. (Thanks for the tip TK!)
+ Since I have been doing this in warm weather and I’ve been in midtown mostly, here are some tips:
:: Ditch the bike. I love biking, but the sweaty hair won’t do it.
:: Carry the following in your purse: deo, hand sanitizer, perfume, hair product, phone charger.
+ And lastly, you know this one, always follow up with thanks youz etc. no later than a day and lay out the request for next steps.
Moots.
